Annual Events at First Church

 Homecoming Sunday

Homecoming Sunday falls at the beginning of First Church's program year in mid-September. After the 10:00 a.m. service, an annual Homecoming Picnic takes place on the front lawn, providing an opportunity for the First Church family to reunite and become reacquainted.

Harvest Sunday

Harvest Sunday takes place on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. It is a festival service in which we celebrate and give thanks for the bountiful gifts of God. During the service we make a special offering including gifts of canned foods to be given to H.O.M.E. Co-op in Maine and Neighbor-to-Neighbor.

During Advent special services are held. On Christmas Eve there are several services: A service is held at 10:00 a.m. especially designed for younger children and all other members of the First Church family. The 4:00 p.m. service is a festival candlelight service for all ages followed at 5:00 p.m. by a traditional carol sing at Binney Park. There is a candlelight communion service at 8:00 p.m. and then at 10:30 p.m. a special recital which leads into the 11:00 p.m. candlelight service of worship.

Holy Week and Easter

Palm Sunday service is held at 10:00 a.m. On the Thursday prior to Easter, Maundy Thursday, there is a supper and service with communion and tenebrae from 6:00 p.m. until about 8:00 p.m.

Good Friday

Services include a 10:00 a.m. intergenerational service and an 8:00 p.m. service of music and meditations. At 12:00 noon on Good Friday, the Senior Pilgrim Fellowship carries the cross to Greenwich Point for the sunrise service in which they take part on Easter Sunday. In addition to the sunrise service there are Easter services at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

Recognition Sunday

Recognition Sunday, usually held the first week in May, is a special service in which we acknowledge the work of the children and teachers of the Church School. The third graders receive their own Bibles during the service.

Confirmation Sunday

Usually held the second week in May.  During this communion service the confirmands are made full members of our church.

Music Sunday

Music Sunday, our annual worship/celebration marking the end of the choir season, takes place mid-May every year. Our choirs, often with guest soloists and instrumentalists, create an unforgettable worship experience. After the service, refreshments on the lawn and a Maypole dance have traditionally been part of this great First Church tradition.

Heritage Sunday

Heritage Sunday is a time to honor those who have been members of this church or a combination of churches for fifty years or more.

Founders' Day

The Founders' Day service is held on the Sunday closest to Founders' Day in Old Greenwich which is July 18. It is a service in which to reflect on the rich history of First Church and the community.
