Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost
15 October 2006
10 o’clock in the morning

Welcome to this Service of Worship at First Congregational Church. This is Stewardship Sunday when our hearts and minds begin to meditate on our pledged intentions in support of the church’s ministry during the coming year. The ongoing call of our faith is “Growing Gifts with God”. Theologian Paul Tillich reminds us of our mutuality:

“Religion is first, an open hand to receive a gift and second, an acting hand to distribute gifts.”
First Congregational Church of Greenwich declares itself to be open and affirming; open to all for participation, membership, leadership and employment, and affirming of all who wish to join us as children of God. We continue to give thanks for God's guidance in our journey of faith.

PRAISING GOD

CALL TO WORSHIP

*OPENING HYMN AND PROCESSION
New Century Hymnal 558 to the tune IN BABILONE
O How Glorious, Full of Wonder

OPENING PRAYER (in unison)
Immersed in the mystery of abundance and inner need, we pause in the midst of the journey, O God of provision.
Touch us in this hour of aspiration that we might be drawn toward your plan for our lives, and energized for faithful response through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSING TO GOD

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
(in unison)
You have called us to a life of simplicity, O God of our salvation, but our lives are cluttered with many things, rendering us insensitive to your calling. You have prompted us in the rich ways of sharing, O God of our redemption, but we are skilled at holding tight, pushing us beyond your prompting. You have prodded us toward a lifestyle of service, O God of transformation, but we are more comfortable with being served, distancing us from the influence of your prodding. Forgive us this day for our dimness in seeing and following, for we would be renewed as disciples of Jesus whose simplicity, whose sharing, whose service, marked his life as one which was faithful to your purposes. Amen

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

‡CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

HEARING GOD'S WORD

FIRST LESSON   Dick Peebles
Psalms 24
The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it,
the world, and those who live in it;
for he has founded it on the seas,
and established it on the rivers.

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
Those who have clean hands and pure hearts,
who do not lift up their souls to what is false,
and do not swear deceitfully.
They will receive blessing from the Lord,
and vindication from the God of their salvation.
Such is the company of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
Selah

Lift up your heads, O gates!
and be lifted up, O ancient doors!
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is the King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord, mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O gates!
and be lifted up, O ancient doors!
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts,
he is the King of glory.
Selah

SCRIPTURE ANTHEM The Chancel Choir
Lift Up Your Heads    William Mathias
(text is Psalm 24: 7-10)

SECOND LESSON
Luke 19: 11-27
As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. So he said, ‘A nobleman went to a distant country to get royal power for himself and then return. He summoned ten of his slaves, and gave them ten pounds, and said to them, “Do business with these until I come back.” But the citizens of his country hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, “We do not want this man to rule over us.” When he returned, having received royal power, he ordered these slaves, to whom he had given the money, to be summoned so that he might find out what they had gained by trading. The first came forward and said, “Lord, your pound has made ten more pounds.” He said to him, “Well done, good slave! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.” Then the second came, saying, “Lord, your pound has made five pounds.” He said to him, “And you, rule over five cities.” Then the other came, saying, “Lord, here is your pound. I wrapped it up in a piece of cloth, for I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man; you take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.” He said to him, “I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! You knew, did you, that I was a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? Why then did you not put my money into the bank? Then when I returned, I could have collected it with interest.” He said to the bystanders, “Take the pound from him and give it to the one who has ten pounds.” (And they said to him, “Lord, he has ten pounds!”) “I tell you, to all those who have, more will be given; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.” ’

‡*HYMN
Pilgrim Hymnal 269 to the tune ST. THOMAS
I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord
(The Pastor’s Class and Sixth Grade leave for their classes)

SERMON
“A Lasting Investment” Dr. David D. Young

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (in unison)
The world needs all of our power and love and energy, and each of us has something we can give. The trick is to find it and use it, to find it and give it away, so there will always be more. We can be lights for each other, and through each other’s illumination we will see the way. Each of us is a seed, a silent promise, and it is always spring.” Let it be. Amen. Merle Shain

*Gloria Patri (Pilgrim Hymnal 513 )
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.
CALL TO PASTORAL PRAYER Rev. Ronald E. Halvorsen

PASTORAL PRAYER AND QUIET MEDITATION

LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
