Thirteenth Sunday after
Pentecost
3 September 2006
10 o'clock in the morning
|
Welcome
to this service of worship
at First Congregational Church. This morning we will be
considering the subject of faith in action.
''Faith makes all things possible, and love makes them easy.
Faith in God is never out of season. Faith justifies the
believer, but love justifies his faith by the works which it
produces. Faith believes God to be true; love proves faith to be
true.'' Charles H. Spurgeon
First Congregational Church of Greenwich declares itself to be
open and affirming; open to all for participation, membership,
leadership and employment, and affirming of all who wish to join
us as children of God. We continue to give thanks for God's
guidance in our journey of faith. |

PRAISING GOD
*OPENING HYMN AND PROCESSION
Pilgrim Hymnal 12 to the tune LASST
UNS ERFREUEN
From All That Dwell Below the Skies
OPENING PRAYER (in unison) Anna
Paskausky
Gracious God, we thank you for all the
good things with which you fill our lives, but most of all for the
vision of peace and freedom in Christ that draws us into the future. May
we be your people in the world, in word and in deed, in spirit and in
truth. Grant that we may not be play-actors, but people who show we
truly care, like Jesus Christ, whose very life was love. Amen.
CONFESSING TO GOD
CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison)
Gracious God, we come before you
confessing a desire to be faithful as well as a reluctance to follow
faith's course and calling. We yearn for an ample faith and strive to be
instruments of your supple Spirit. Yet, we often believe sparingly and
confine ourselves through bondage to inflexible notions. Challenge us to
stretch our spiritual selves, to grow in new directions, to discover in
doing your will a source of joy and value.
Forgive us when we pursue contentment
without commitment, when we allow our best intentions to receive minimal
effort, when we choose to present a veneer of niceness in situations
requiring expression of the truth or recognition of injustice. Help us
to be whole persons, holy persons, well persons.
Instill in us not only an expanding
devotion to you, but also the courage to be willing to follow wherever
that devotion leads us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed
be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as
we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory
forever. Amen.
WORDS OF ASSURANCE
‡CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE
Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
HEARING GOD'S WORD
FIRST LESSON Mary Ranta
Song of Solomon 2: 8-13
The voice of my beloved! Look, he
comes, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills. My beloved
is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look, there he stands behind our
wall, gazing in at the windows, looking through the lattice. My beloved
speaks and says to me: 'Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; for
now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on
the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove
is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines
are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one,
and come away.

Song of Solomon 2: 1-5, 7-8, 10-11
SECOND LESSON
Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23
Now when the Pharisees and some of the
scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed
that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is,
without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat
unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of
the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they
wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the
washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the
scribes asked him, 'Why do your disciples not live according to the
tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?' He said to them,
'Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,
''This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from
me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.''
You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.'
Then he called the crowd again and said
to them, 'Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing
outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come
out are what defile.' For it is from within, from the human heart, that
evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice,
wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All
these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.'

SERMON
''A Time for Action'' Rev. Susan M.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (in unison)
We believe that God summons the Church
to participation in the world. To witness by word and deed to God's
revelation in Christ and the acts of love by which God reconciles us. To
evoke in us the personal response of repentance and faith through which
we can find newness of life in loving relationships with God and with
our sisters and brothers everywhere. To bring us together into a
Christian community of worship and love, and to send us forth into the
world as servants in the struggle for meaning and justice. To move us to
live in awareness of the life-giving power of God's presence, in
acknowledgement of God's rule over history and in the confident
expectation of the final completion of God's purpose. Amen.
*Gloria Patri (New Century Hymnal
754)
Glory to God the Creator, and to the
Christ, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Amen.

Christ. Let us hold the cup until all have been served, remembering our
oneness with God and our unity in the Body of Christ.
During communion the choir will sing

Hymnal 342.
Prayer of Thanksgiving (in unison)
We thank you, God, for inviting us to
this table where we have known the presence of Christ and have received

Christ our Savior. Amen.
